Protect What Connects Us — Newfoundland & Labrador’s Lakes, Rivers, and Wetlands

About the Campaign
Freshwater is the lifeblood of Newfoundland & Labrador — it sustains our wildlife, communities, and way of life.
Yet our ponds, rivers, and wetlands face growing threats from pollution, shoreline development, and climate change.
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Newfoundland & Labrador (CPAWS-NL) is leading a province-wide Freshwater Campaign to inspire action, build awareness, and protect these vital ecosystems for generations to come.
Join us in celebrating and safeguarding the waters that connect us all.
Our Goals
-
Protect Newfoundland & Labrador’s freshwater ecosystems and the species that depend on them.
-
Engage communities through cleanups, guided hikes, and citizen science projects.
-
Educate the public about the importance of freshwater conservation and the simple steps everyone can take to help.
-
Advocate for stronger protection of lakes, rivers, and wetlands across the province.
Why Freshwater Matters
-
Biodiversity: Freshwater habitats support countless species, from salmon and otters to dragonflies and loons.
-
Community: These places provide drinking water, recreation, and cultural connection.
-
Climate Resilience: Wetlands and ponds store carbon and buffer us from floods and drought.
-
Heritage: Our freshwater systems shape the stories and traditions that define Newfoundland & Labrador.
