The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is a national non-profit organization that has been Canada’s voice for wilderness for over 50 years. At CPAWS-NL, our mission is to promote the systematic establishment of new terrestrial and marine protected areas and to foster effective management of existing protected areas in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Are you passionate about conservation, community engagement, and protecting Newfoundland and Labrador’s incredible wildlife? The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter (CPAWS NL) is seeking a dedicated and energetic Community Conservation Assistant to help lead community-based efforts in protecting our natural environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Community Engagement & Relationship Building
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local organizations, and stakeholders.
- Act as a liaison between CPAWS NL and communities to ensure conservation goals align with local needs.
- Support outreach efforts to gather insights and identify allies for conservation initiatives.
Program Coordination – Puffin & Petrel Patrol
- Manage Puffin Patrol headquarters, including scheduling and coordinating resources.
- Train and supervise volunteers to safely conduct bird rescues.
- Ensure data on seabird rescues and releases is accurately collected and reported
Educational & Outreach Activities
- Create accessible and engaging conservation content for our website, digital platforms, and community events.
- Help design and deliver educational workshops, guided walks, and presentations for youth, families, and local groups.
- Support smooth and meaningful participation in community events.
Event Planning & Coordination
- Organize and promote events like public talks, clean-up days, and conservation-themed celebrations.
- Develop outreach materials such as newsletters, posters, and social media content to boost engagement.
Administrative & Reporting Tasks
- Maintain accurate records of outreach activities and contacts.
- Contribute to grant applications, progress reports, and evaluations with insights from community work.
Key Qualifications (Required):
- Strong understanding of community engagement principles and conservation practices
- Experience in organizing public events, outreach activities, and volunteer coordination
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills across diverse platforms and audiences
- Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and community groups
- Strong organizational skills, including accurate record keeping and task management
- Demonstrated interest in environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and education
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for community travel
Assets:
- Proficiency with digital tools such as Canva, and social media platforms
- Experience with data entry and analysis related to outreach or conservation efforts (e.g., Excel, Survey123)
- Familiarity with Newfoundland and Labrador communities, especially coastal or rural areas, including knowledge of local ecosystems and wildlife management strategies

To be eligible, youth must:
be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period*
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment** and
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
