Gros Morne National Park’s Western Brook Pond – Change at What Cost?
In this special featured blog post, guest author, nature guide and former Parks Canada employee, Alice Will writes about her discovery of the recent infrastructure changes in Gros Morne National Park and how they have affected her experience of Gros Morne National Park’s famous inland fjord, Western Brook Pond.
Will writes,” Gone are the boardwalks to protect the ecosystem. The trees which take decades to grow have been plowed over, the delicate and rare plants choked under gravel.” Will goes on to ask and answer the question, “Who is benefiting from the new access road? …Quite frankly, nobody. Not the visitors. Not the locals. Not even Parks Canada or the boat [tour] operator.”
Piece by piece, Will builds a picture of how neglectful park management actions have weakened a world class experience. Will urges readers to fight for the National Parks that work to protect ecological integrity, through effective detailed impact assessments, and thorough public consultation.
