On Thursday, July 5th, we spent the day at Mill Street Brewery learning about the brewing process for their new Puffin Plunge beer, which was created in support of CPAWS-NL’s Puffin & Petrel Patrol. We learned about the steps of creating a dry-hopped lager, and by the end of the day Puffin Plunge was stored to mature until August.

Though Mill Street Brewery has several locations across Canada, you wouldn’t know it from the way the St John’s location is operated. The brewery is very involved in the St John’s community, and partners with various local initiatives through their unique brews, such as the Capelin Hound Session IPA (in support of WWF’s conservation work with Newfoundland’s capelin), or the Puffin Plunge Lager they’re creating for us.

Our partnership with Mill Street Brewery started when Mill Street sales manager Jordan White volunteered with Puffin & Petrel Patrol. As a supporter of the program, he wanted to get Mill Street involved to promote the program and help raise awareness for fledgling puffins and storm petrels stranded on land by light pollution. We were excited by the idea of creating a beer inspired by Newfoundland’s puffins that could also garner interest for our rescue program.

Puffin Plunge will be a refreshing, aromatic lager perfect for summer and seabird fledgling season. The beer is currently maturing and will be available on tap in August, by which point Puffin & Petrel Patrol will be in full swing.
