Province rejects Parks Canada on south coast conservation area

It was sold to residents of the south coast as a Gros Morne on the water.

Since 2003, people in Burgeo and four of the outports on the south coast of Newfoundland had been working with Parks Canada to potentially set up a National Marine Conservation Area around the cliffs and fjords of the central south coast.

Parks Canada had approached the provincial government several years ago with an offer to do a feasibility study on the area, and the project had been in limbo ever since.

Last week the provincial government told The Gulf News it has declined that offer from Parks Canada.
