CPAWS-NL, Friends of Pippy Park and the Natural History Society Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Parks Day

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter, Friends of Pippy Park and the Natural History Society invites everyone to come out on Saturday, July 18th to participate in a hike around Pippy Park’s Three Pond Barrens to celebrate Canada’s Parks Day.

“It’s wonderful to have such great parks here in Newfoundland for the public to enjoy,” says Mike Manning of Friends of Pippy Park, “Parks Day is an important event to raise awareness about the value of parks and historic sites and the preservation of them within the community.”

Canada’s Parks Day is a national event, held on the third Saturday of July, to celebrate parks and historic sites throughout Canada. Last year, around 300 events across the country were held to celebrate Parks Day. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Parks Day.

Experienced hikers, Dr. Donald Steele (Professor Emeritus of Biology at Memorial University), and Mike Manning (Friends of Pippy Park) will guide the casual hike that will take approximately two hours to complete. Anyone interested should meet at 10AM on Saturday, July 18th at the very end of Allandale Road (in Pippy Park). The hike will take us around Three Ponds Barrens, stopping at points of interest, reaching the final destination at Left Pond, the site of the old Scouts Camp Chalet, dating back to the 1930s.
